The first Europeans who settled in Marblehead were the Pilgrims who arrived in 1620. The town was first settled in 1630 and was formally chartered by the Massachusetts General Court in 1639. The town was initially named Newbury, in honor of the Earl of Newbury, but the name was changed to Marblehead in 1639 in honor of the head of the English royal family, the Duke of Marlborough.

Today, Marblehead is a Picturesque city with a rich maritime and colonial history. It is known for its Georgian and Federal-era architecture, as well as its 15-mile long waterfront that has been the site of shipbuilding and trade since colonial times.
