Lucama City is located in Union County, North Carolina and is part of the Raleigh-Cary Metropolitan Statistical Area. With a population of 4,485 as of the 2010 census, Lucama is the seventeenth largest city in North Carolina. Lucama is also the birthplace of country music singer Dwight Yoakam and film producer Irwin Winkler.
Lucama is located in the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The city is bordered by the city of Oxford to the north, by Union County to the east, and by the town of Clayton to the south. Lucama is located at the crossroads of intersecting highways US 70, I-40, and I-85.
Lucama is served by the Lucama School District and has a total of four schools: Lucama Elementary, Lucama Middle, Lucama High, and the Oxford Campus of Union County Community College.
Lucama has a warm-summer humid subtropical climate, characterized by long, warm summers and a generally mild climate. Lucama is in the "Colder East" section of the United States and experiences significant variations in temperatures from day to night and from year to year. The average daytime summer temperature is 77 degrees, but nighttime lows can dip below 60 degrees in winter.
Lucama was first settled in the early 1800s by the Peyton, Ransom, and Vaughan families. The town was named for the Lucamas, an Indian tribe that once lived in the area.
Lucama is home to the 1885 Lucama Opera House, the oldest continuously used opera house in the state. The opera house has been used for various events, including the filming of the movie "The Unforgiven."
The Blue Ridge Folk Art Center is also located in Lucama. The center is home to the world's largest collection of Appalachian Folk Art.
Lucama is home to a variety of small businesses, including a brewery, winery, and bakery. The city is also home to the Lucama Mill, one of the last remaining sawmills in North Carolina. The mill has been in operation since 1853 and produces a variety of lumber products.
