Limon originates from the Spanish word limón, meaning lemon. The city of Limon is located in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental in the state of Guanajuato, a Spanish-speaking region in central Mexico. Limon is bordered by the municipalities of Silao to the northwest, Valle de Santiago to the north, San Miguel de Allende to the east, and municipality of Leonardo Bravo to the south.

The city is located at the base of the Sierra Madre Oriental, at an elevation of just over 2,000 meters. The city has a temperate climate, with warm summers and cold winters. Limon experiences a lot of rains, with annual totals around 1,000 mm. Limon has a population of around 184,000, making it the fifth most populated city in the state of Guanajuato.

Among the most popular are the Santo Domingo monastery, the Ciudad Licenciada de San Miguel de Allende, the Parque de la Reserva Ecológica de La Paz, the Museo de Arte Popular and the Palacio Municipal.
