Lanett, Alabama is a city in Baldwin County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,781 at the 2010 census. Lanett is the county seat of Baldwin County. The location was first settled in 1802 by James Lanett and his family. The city was named after Lanett, a community in Jefferson County, Mississippi. U.S. Route 280, the eastern border of Lanett, is named after Lanett. The city is located on the Alabama River and is bisected by the railroad tracks of the Norfolk Southern Railway which continue north to Huntsville. Lanett is 13 miles west of Fairfield and 18 miles east of Effingham. In the late 1990s there were plans to demolish the downtown section of Lanett and relocate the community to create a new city to be called "Lanett West." The plans were cancelled when plans for a new bridge over the Alabama River were scrapped. Lanett's downtown section includes the Baldwin County Courthouse, the Lanett City Hall, the Lanett City Library, an art museum, a park, a veterans memorial and numerous other buildings.

The city is located in the southeastern corner of Baldwin County and is bordered to the northeast by the city of Montgomery, to the east by the city of Fairfield, to the south by the city of Jemison, and to the west by the city of Prattville. US 280 and the Norfolk Southern Railway bisect the city north-south. Interstate 65 passes about 10 miles to the north of Lanett. The nearest states are Mississippi to the east, Georgia to the south, and Tennessee to the west. The nearest capitals are Montgomery, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia. Lanett is home to the Lanett County Fair, which is held each August. The fairgrounds include a number of amusement rides and a livestock show. Notable landmarks in Lanett include the Lanett County Courthouse, the Lanett City Hall, the Lanett City Library, the Lanett Park, the Veterans Memorial, and the Lanett Art Museum.
