Early Laclede City was located near the confluence of the Laclede and Missouri Rivers, but the city subsequently grew up in the surrounding countryside. Laclede City is located in Camden County and is bordered by Perry County to the north, St. Louis County to the east, Independence County to the south, and Clay County to the west. Laclede City has a population of approximately 14,000 and is the county seat of Camden County. The nearest state capital is Jefferson City, and the nearest major city is St. Louis. Laclede City has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild, wet winters. The city is notable for its historic area, including the restored downtown (including the Missouri State Capitol), the Scott Joplin House, the Ozark Inn, and the Laclede County Courthouse. Laclede City is also the home of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy and the United States Military Academy at West Point. As the birthplace of John S.
