Jarales is located in the municipality of Heredia, in the north-central region of Costa Rica. It is the capital of the Jarales District, which has a population of around 20,000, with a total area of 5,421 hectares. The municipality also includes the villages of Corral, San Andrés, and Santa Clara.

The city is bordered by the Grecia National Park to the southwest, the Cerro Verde National Park to the east, and the Osa Conservation Area to the north.
