Iota City is located in the east-central part of Iowa, about halfway between Des Moines and Ames. It is bordered on the north by the city of Marion, on the south by Cherokee County, and on the west by Palo Alto County. Iota has a total area of 7.0 square miles, and a population of 11,492 as of the 2010 census.

Iota is in the central part of Iowa, just west of the geographical center of the state. The city is in the easternmost part of the Iowa Blackland Prairie, and is located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 30 and State Highway 61. Iota experiences a semi-arid climate (Köppen Climate Classification "BSk"), with hot, dry summers and cold, moist winters. It is the only Iowa city to have records of temperature extremes reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Iota is the county seat of Plymouth County, and the economic center of the county. It is also the home of the University of Iowa Regional Medical Center. The city's largest employers are Mercy Health Iota and the University of Iowa. Iota is also home to the Iota Golf Course, one of the city's two public golf courses.

Iota is home to two museums: the Iota County Historical Museum, housed in the former Masonic temple, and the Iota County Memorial Museum, located in the old jail.

The Iota city school district has six schools: Iota Elementary, Iota Middle, Iota High, Iota South Middle, Iota South High, and University of Iowa Regional Medical Center. The district has an enrollment of 3,733 students, and is ranked number one in Iowa for academic performance according to the Iowa Assessment tests.

Iota is home to the Iowa Farm Bureau State Fair, which is the largest livestock exposition in the state. The fair is held every September.

Iota is served by the Iota city police department and the Iowa State Patrol. Iota is also served by two hospitals: Mercy Health Iota and the University of Iowa Regional Medical Center.
