Most people know that sunset is the time when the sun goes down. But did you know that the sun doesn't actually set? Instead, Earth rotates into darkness, giving us the illusion that the sun is setting. So what causes sunset?
Well, it's a combination of things. The Earth's atmosphere scatters sunlight in every direction, but blue and violet light are scattered more than other colors. This is why the sky is usually blue during the daytime. As the sun gets lower in the sky, the atmosphere becomes thicker and more dense.
This scattering of sunlight happens to a greater extent, and we see red and orange light more than blue and violet light. That's why sunset is usually a beautiful red or orange color. So next time you see sunset, remember that you're actually seeing Earth rotate into darkness!
Idyllwild is a city located in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 11,995 at the 2010 census, up from 10,552 at the 2000 census. idyllwild was incorporated in 1972 and is a suburb of the city of Riverside. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.5 km2), all of it land.
Idyllwild is located in the Inland valleys, south of Palm Springs and east of the San Bernardino Mountains.
Idyllwild is bordered by the city of Palm Springs on the north and northeast, the unincorporated community of Cathedral City on the east, the Inland Empire city of Norco on the south, and Hemet on the west. Interstate 10 forms the northwestern border of the city, and State Route 111 forms the southern border; both highways run through the city center.
Idyllwild experiences an arid desert climate, similar to that of Palm Springs to the east. The daily average temperature in January is 53.1 degrees Fahrenheit and the daily average temperature in July is 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The annual precipitation averages 17.7 inches (450 mm). Snow is very rare in the city, which has seen only a trace amount on the ground only once in recorded history.
As of the census of 2000, there were 10,552 people, 4,204 households and 2,906 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,289.2 people per square mile (855.1/km²). There were 4,566 housing units at an average density of 854.5 per square mile (330.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 85.27% White, 0.61% African American, 2.25% Native American, 1.07% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 6.73% from other races, and 2.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 21.79% of the population.
There were 4,204 households out of which 31.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.07.

Did you know that darkness actually begins long before the sun sets? As the sun gets lower in the sky, its light has to travel through more atmosphere. This filters out some of the blue light, making the sun look redder. At the same time, shadows get longer and darker. So by the time the sun finally dips below the horizon, darkness has already begun to fall.
Of course, not all places on Earth experience darkness at the same time. Near the equator, the sun sets and rises almost directly overhead. This means that there is less of a difference between daytime and nighttime. Closer to the poles, however, the sun stays low in the sky for much of the year. This leads to longer periods of darkness during wintertime.
