The city borders Lansing to the southeast, Charlottetown to the southwest, Monroe to the northwest, and Clinton Township to the northeast.

Howe has been settled since the late 1800s. The city was named for Judge Elijah Howe, who was the first justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. The early economy of Howe was based on agriculture and the manufacture of flour and lumber.

Today, the city is primarily a suburban community, with a strong education and medical industry presence. The economy of the city is based on the tertiary industry of health care.
