Located in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Hornitos is a small town nestled in the New Mexico countryside. The town is located in the northwestern corner of Cibola County, directly east of Grants. Hornitos is bordered by the towns of Grants and Elephant Butte on the east and south, respectively. The town is serviced by U.S. Route 54.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,367 people, 836 households, and 639 families residing in the town. The population density was 298.4 people per square mile (113.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 91.50% White, 0.93% African American, 1.15% Native American, 1.47% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.07% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.06% of the population.

In the town, the population was spread out with 47.4% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $26,421, and the median income for a family was $29,833. Males had a median income of $27,438 versus $16,188 for females.
