Located at the juncture of the Raritan and Musconetcong Rivers, Hightstown is bordered by the city of Edison to the north, Monroe to the east, and Morristown to the south. The Raritan River forms the natural eastern and southern boundaries of the city.

The municipality is bisected by the Jersey City/World Trade Center Expressway, which runs through the heart of the city. The eastern half of the city (along the expressway) is mostly residential and commercial, and the western half is more industrial and commercial.

Hightstown is 33 miles west of Philadelphia and 45 miles northeast of New York City.

Like much of New Jersey, Hightstown experiences a humid subtropical climate, with mild to warm winters and hot, humid summers. Average monthly temperatures range from a low of 48 degrees in January to a high of 85 degrees in July.

The city's economy is based largely on the service and technology sectors, with a significant concentration of jobs in healthcare, biotechnology, and information technology. The city also has a growing arts and entertainment sector.
