Herculaneum, located in the Herculaneum region of Italy, is a city best known for its ruins and its importance in Roman history. The city is located on the Gulf of Naples, about 60 miles southeast of Naples and about 10 miles east of the mouth of the Sarno River.

The city is located in the province of Formia and has a territory of about 6.3 square miles. The municipality has about 9,000 inhabitants and the city Proper has about 17,000. The city is traversed by the SS 121 highway and it is 33 miles from the Barium coast and 10 from the mouth of the Sarno River.

Herculaneum is an important archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ruins date back to the end of the 1st century BC and the city prospered through the Roman Empire. It was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 and was rediscovered in 1609.

Major attractions in the city include the Herculaneum Museum, the Villa dei Papiri, the Terme di Caracalla, the Villa of the Papyri, and the ruins of the bath complex of Diomede. Other attractions include the City Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Archaeological Park of the Villa dei Papiri, the archaeological area of Ruvo, the archaeological area of Posidonia, and the extensive salt-working area of Pozzuoli.
