Located at the confluence of the forks of the Snake and Columbia Rivers, Hazelton was first settled in 1871. The city was founded in response to a claim by the Northern Pacific Railroad that the site was strategically located between the two rivers. The railroad convinced the county to build a courthouse and town site, and offered to buy the land from the settlers for $25 per acre.
The city developed rapidly, and by 1891, it had a hotel, a bank, a hospital, four churches, and a population of 500. The original town site was abandoned in the early 1900s and the city expanded north and east. The city's population grew slowly until the 1930s, when the Depression caused a boom in the logging and agriculture industries.
Hazelton is the center of wine production in Washington. The Columbia Valley AVA, which covers parts of Yakima, Kittitas, Stevens, Walla Walla, Benton, and Yakima counties, is the largest wine-producing region in the state.
