Hayward, California, located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, is the third largest city in the Bay Area after San Francisco and Oakland. With a population of approximately 160,000, Hayward is the youngest of the Bay Area's major cities.

Hayward is located in the easternmost part of the Bay Area, at the eastern end of the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. The city is bordered by San Francisco on the north, east, and south; Oakland on the west; and Fremont, Newark, and Union City on the south.

The city is considered part of the Tri-Valley area and lies at the eastern edge of the San Francisco Peninsula. Hayward is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Mission Dolores Basilica and the Linear Park Sculpture Trail. The city's major economic engines are the high-tech and bioscience sectors, which have led to the city being dubbed "bioscience capital of the world".

The racial makeup of Hayward was 58.3% White, 2.9% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 15.1% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 7.3% from other races, and 5.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 24.2% of the population.

Hayward was founded by Leland and Jane Hayward on land leased from Don Antonio Silva in 1868. It became a town in 1878 and was incorporated as a city in 1968.
