Hat Creek is the principal town in the Feather River Valley irrigated agriculture region and is the largest city in Yuba County. Hat Creek is located on the north bank of the Feather River, at an elevation of 1,920 feet. The closest large cities are the state capital Sacramento 34 miles to the southwest, and Reno 54 miles to the east. The state capital Sacramento and Reno are connected by Interstate 5. Hat Creek is within driving distance of the cities of Oroville 5 miles to the north, and Gridley 10 miles to the south. Sacramento is the state capital of California and is home to a large population of California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) students. Reno is the county seat of Yuba County and is the home of the University of Nevada, Reno.

Hat Creek is located in the northeast corner of California in the Feather River valley. The Feather River flows southward from the Wheeler Peak region in the Sierra Nevada, through a wide, flat valley, to the Sacramento River, 30 miles to the south. The Sacramento River and its tributaries provide the irrigation water that has made Hat Creek and the surrounding area a major agricultural region. The city is located at the junction of State Highway 88, which runs east to west through the valley, and State Highway 20, which runs north to south. State Highway 88 and State Highway 20 are the primary transportation arteries in Hat Creek. Hat Creek is just east of the confluence of the North Fork and the South Fork Feather River. The North Fork Feather River flows eastward from the Pine Nut Mountains, while the South Fork Feather River heads south from the Sierra Nevada, through the Sacramento Valley, to join the North Fork Feather River just east of Hat Creek.
