In 1818, the community was renamed Halsey after General Horatio Halsey, who had won distinction in the Mexican-American War. General Halseyville became Halsey in 1892.

Halsey has a variety of businesses and industries, including a paper mill, numerous restaurants and bars, and a GE Aviation plant. The city is also home to Halsey Technical College, a two-year community college.
