Built on a low ridge overlooking the Shenandoah Valley, the city is a tobacco-growing and agricultural center. Hallville is located at 39°5′54″N 78°39′10″W / 39.097°N 78.651°W / 39.097; -78.651 (39.09714, -78.65122). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.4 km2), all of it land.

The city is situated atop a low ridge overlooking the Shenandoah Valley. The city is bordered by Cedarville to the west, White Sulphur Springs to the southwest, Fluvanna County to the south, and Staunton to the east. Hallville is located in Jefferson County, which is in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Hallville has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) with cool, increasingly cold winters and hot, generally humid summers. There is significant variation in temperatures from year to year due to the effects of the Southern Oscillation.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,579 people, 1,020 households, and 665 families residing in the city. The population density was 928.4 people per square mile (354.4/km²). There were 1,094 housing units at an average density of 399.4 per square mile (154.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.17% White, 3.44% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.06% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.59% of the population.

There were 1,020 households out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.07.
