Gustavus, located in the heart of Minnesota, is the oldest city in the state. Originally founded as a trading post in 1849, Gustavus was officially incorporated as a city in 1852. The city lies in rolling hills and farmland in northern Minnesota, close to the Canada–US border. With a population of just over 23,000, Gustavus is a relatively small city, but boasts a variety of restaurants, shops, and attractions.

Gustavus has a warm and humid climate with average highs in the mid-30s° F and lows in the low 20s° F. The city experiences a great deal of precipitation, with an annual average of over 50 inches. Due to its location in the Midwest, Gustavus experiences a variety of weather conditions, including snow in the wintertime.

Most of Gustavus' attractions are located within the city limits. These include the Gustavus Museum of Art, the Gustavus Historical Museum, and the Tinebaker-Larsen Pioneer Farm. Just outside the city limits is the Arrowhead Golf Course, Lester Park, and the Gustavus Bikeway. There are also a number of sizable towns nearby, including Fergus Falls and Medora. Manitoba, Canada, is the nearest state capital.

This means that there is less of a difference between daytime and nighttime. Closer to the poles, however, the sun stays low in the sky for much of the year. This leads to longer periods of darkness during wintertime.
