In December 2004, residents voted to change the city's name from Mahwah to Glen Rock in order to distance the city from the unofficial Mahwah Mountaineers name. Glen Rock is located in the heart of the MetroWest region, approximately equidistant from the cities of New York City, Newark and Trenton.

Glen Rock is located in central Bergen County at (40.668262, -74.000471), directly east of the Mahwah Mountains. The city is bordered by Mahwah to the north, Upper Saddle River to the east, Montvale to the south, and Glen Rock Borough to the west.

Glen Rock is approximately four miles long by two miles wide and has a total area of 13.14 square miles.
