The city has a population of over 29,000 and is the center of a population of over 465,000 in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area. The city is also part of the larger Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area, which has a population of 1,500,000.

Giddings is located at 29°06′N96°03′W / 29.11ᵉˈN96.03ᵉW / 29.11; -96.03 (29.11, -96.03). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.2 square miles (35.3 km²), of which, 12.8 square miles (32.5 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²) of it (4.4%) is water.

Giddings has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa), with hot, humid summers and cold, drier winters. Precipitation is heavy throughout the year, with a peak in late summer and early fall.

As of the census of 2000, there were 25,564 people, 10,527 households, and 7,129 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,232.7 people per square mile (475.8/km²). There were 11,013 housing units at an average density of 439.5 per square mile (169.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 89.75% White, 5.25% African American, 1.04% Native American, 0.80% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.48% from other races, and 2.30% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.92% of the population.
