Genoa ( Genna ) is the capital of the Liguria region of Italy and the second most populous city after Milan. The city has a population of 219,599 (1 October 2014).

Genoa is located on the eastern coast of Italy, on the Gulf of Lion. The city stretches along the Gulf of Genoa and its southern tip forms the promontory of Liguria. The city was an early Christian colony and has contributed significantly to Western art, literature and science. In the High Middle Ages, Genoa became one of the most prosperous centres of trade in Europe. It prospered in the Middle Ages as a commerce and shipping hub and its port played an important role in the maritime trade of Europe.

The citys historic centre, concentrated on the Naviglio Canal, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city's new downtown area, the Business Square, was designed by the Swedish architectural firm MVRDV and was inaugurated in 2011.

Genoa is home to two of Europe's major football clubs, A.C. Milan and Juventus, and the local rugby union team, Zebre. The 1986 World Championship in Athletics was held in Genoa.

Tourist attractions in Genoa include the Palazzo Reale and the Castello Sforzesco, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Other attractions include the beaches of the Ligurian Coast, the Palace of Caserta and the Cathedral of Genoa.
