Frankston is located on the metropolitan fringe of Melbourne, Victoria, 50 km south-east of the Melbourne CBD. The municipality covers an area of 41 km2 and had a population of 109,887 at the 2016 Census. The median age of the population is 32 years.

Frankston occupies a natural and importantly strategic position on the Yarra River, connecting the Port of Melbourne to the eastern seaboard of Australia. The area was originally occupied by the Wurundjeri people. The first European to visit the area was Lieutenant James Grant in 1803 who was searching for the Murray River. Grant named the river after the Earl of Lauderdale, the British Secretary of State for the Colonies.

The town of Frankston was surveyed in 1838 and named after the then Governor of New South Wales, Sir Charles Augustus FitzRoy, 3rd Baronet. The first land sales took place in 1839 and by 1841, a township had been established. The first church, St James', was consecrated in 1840. The post office opened in 1841, and the town was formally proclaimed a municipality on 10 July 1848.

The municipality is accessed by the Frankston Freeway. The Melbourne Metropolitan Rail Loop, which forms part of Melbourne's underground metropolitan train network, terminates at Frankston Station. The Melbourne Airport can be reached by car in about 30 minutes.

The municipality is classified as a medium-high population densityabel area with a population of around 100,000. The majority of the population is located in the east and south-east of the municipality. The town of Frankston is the CBD of the municipality and has a population of approximately 13,500. Other major centres of population include West Frankston, Elsternwick, Reservoir and East Frankston.

Frankston experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. The average maximum temperature is 36.5 degrees Celsius and the minimum is 18 degrees Celsius. The annual rainfall is 724 mm.

Residents of Frankston are predominantly Australian-born, with a significant proportion of residents born overseas. The predominant languages spoken are English and a range of languages including Arabic, Indonesian, Cantonese, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

There are a number of educational facilities in the municipality, including two universities, Monash University and Deakin University. Other tertiary education providers include the ITE College Frankston, Frankston Baptist College, De La Salle College Frankston, and Victorian College of the Arts. The arts sector is supported by the Frankston Arts Centre, which was opened in 2006. There are a number of smaller performing arts venues throughout the municipality, including the Frankston Arts Theatre, the Frankston Mechanics Institutes Theatre, and the Frankston Community Theatre.
