Fort McNoy was first established in 1696 by the French. The area now known as Fort Mc Coy was fought over by the French and British during the War of 1812. The fort was abandoned in 1815.

The site was acquired by the United States in 1825, and the fort was rebuilt. It became part of the Oregon Territory in 1848, and the United States Army was stationed there until 1866.

In 1871, the fort was turned over to the United States Military Academy. It was used as a training ground for officers of the Military Academy.

In 1898, during the Spanish-American War, the fort was used as a base for forces fighting in Cuba.
