{Fort Howard, located in downtown Marquette, Michigan is home to two National Historic Landmarks, the Dexter Barracks and the Stone House. It was also the site of one of the first decisive engagements of the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Lake Erie victory on September 10, 1813.
The fort was first established in 1796 as a outpost to protect fur traders and their trade routes. In 1813, following the outbreak of the war between the United States and Great Britain, the fort was militarily activated and played a critical role in victory at the Battle of Lake Erie. In 1832, the fort was designated as a military post and became a base for Indian removal operations. It later served as a training ground for the U.S. Army.
Today, Fort Howard stands as one of the most intact military complexes of its era and is a unique tourist destination. It is home to the Fort Howard Military Museum, which hosts exhibits on the fort's history, as well as the Dexter Barracks, the home of the U.S. Army's Fourth Infantry Division.
