Located in Columbus County, the city is 75 miles south of Atlanta, 95 miles northeast of Augusta, and 124 miles northwest of Birmingham. The closest state capitals are Augusta, Savannah, and Columbus. The city's geographic region is also home to the Fort Benning Military Reservation which is the largest military installation in the Southeast.

Fort Benning is located at 398°41′33″N 83°39′13″W. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Average monthly temperatures range from 36.5 degrees in the winter to 78.5 degrees in the summer. With an average of 132.2 days of sunshine a year, Fort Benning is one of the sunniest cities in America.

The nearest interstate highway is I-85, which is 25 miles north of the city. There are also several Georgia state routes in the vicinity, as well as the venue for multiple Major League Baseball games, Turner Field, which is 9 miles south of the city. Public transportation is not as well developed in Fort Benning as it is in other cities in the area, but there are numerous bus lines that serve the city.

The city was founded in 1821, and the first fort was built in 1827. Today, Fort Benning is home to the United States Military Academy, one of the United States Army's five service academies. The Academy is the only United States military academy that is also a university. Other educational institutions located in the city include: The College of Law, the School of Infantry, the School of Cadet Medicine, the School of Business and Public Administration, and the School of Military Science. The population of Fort Benning is predominantly white, with a population of 72 percent Caucasian and 19 percent African American. There is a small population of Native Americans living in the city.
