The city was first founded by the Celts in the 2nd century BC and expanded by the Romans in the 1st century AD. In 1224, the city was burned down by the Rus and never rebuilt. In the 16th century, it became a natural administrative centre for the islands of the Elbe estuary. Flensburg was returned to the Kingdom of Denmark in 1660 and became a part of Schleswig-Holstein in 1714. The city became part of the German Empire in 1871, and was returned to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1918. It became part of Schleswig-Holstein again in 1946. Flensburg is well-known for its timber-framed houses and its open-air markets. The city is located on the Schweriner Förde river, in the foothills of the Baltic Mountains, and has a mild climate with average temperatures of about 18-25 degrees Celsius.
