Fair Lawn is located in Bergen County, New Jersey, about 12 miles northwest of Manhattan. As of the 2010 census, the city's population was 22,543, making it the tenth most populous municipality in the state. Fair Lawn is part of the New York metropolitan area.

Fair Lawn is crossed by the Passaic River and includes a number of trails and parks, including Freedom Park and the Mountain Lakes Park. The city is home to the Fordham University New York City Campus.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city had a total area of 10.946 square miles (28.802 km2), of which 10.124 square miles (27.599 km2) was land and 0.544 square miles (1.416 km2) was water.

The land within Fair Lawn was originally part of the Hackensack Company. In 1727, Nicholas Bayard, son of Nicholas Bayard, Sr. (Nicholas Bayard, the first colonial governor of New Jersey), made a land purchase from the Hackensack Company, which included the tract of land that would become Fair Lawn.

The town was laid out on the grid system developed by John Evans, an English surveyor who worked for the Hackensack Company. The layout featured long, narrow streets, backing up to a commons area at the center of the town, now occupied by Freedom Park.

The citizens of Fair Lawn petitioned for a new post office, and on April 1, 1871, the Fair Lawn Post Office was established. The Fair Lawn Post Office was renamed the Hawthorne post office in 1902, and closed in 1951.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city had a total area of 10.946 square miles (28.802 km2), of which 10.124 square miles (27.599 km2) was land and 0.544 square miles (1.416 km2) was water.

Fair Lawn is located in the southwestern corner of Bergen County, New Jersey, with the Passaic River providing the northwestern boundary and the Palisades dividing Fair Lawn from suburban Saddle River in the east. The city extends southward into Saddle River and is partially surrounded by Palisades Park.

Fair Lawn is crossed by the Passaic River and includes a number of trails and parks, including Freedom Park and the Mountain Lakes Park.

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Fair Lawn has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.
