Ermine is located in the southeast corner of Michigan, in the middle of the Upper Peninsula. It is about 60 miles northeast of Marquette and about 150 miles northwest of Detroit.

Ermine is located on the Ermine River, which flows into Lake Michigan. It has a total area of 8.2 square miles, of which 5.1 square miles is land and 3.3 square miles is water.

Ermine has a very flat topography, making it cold and windy year-round. The average temperature in January is −14°F, and in July the average temperature is 107°F.
