The city was named for Ellet Felter, who was the original owner of the town site. The town grew rapidly after the construction of the Indiana and Michigan Canal in 1825, and Ellet's Tavern, the area's first hotel, was built in 1826. The city was incorporated in 1833. Ellettsville is the county seat of Madison County. Located midway between Indianapolis and Chicago, Ellettsville is a major transportation junction. U.S. Highway 41 and Indiana State Road 9 intersect in the city, and Interstate 65 is only 16 miles to the west. Ellettsville has an annual average temperature of 50 degrees and an average annual rainfall of 32 inches. The closest state capital is Indianapolis, which is about 51 miles to the east.
