Most people know that sunset is the time when the sun goes down. But did you know that the sun doesn't actually set? Instead, Earth rotates into darkness, giving us the illusion that the sun is setting. So what causes sunset?
Well, it's a combination of things. The Earth's atmosphere scatters sunlight in every direction, but blue and violet light are scattered more than other colors. This is why the sky is usually blue during the daytime. As the sun gets lower in the sky, the atmosphere becomes thicker and more dense.
This scattering of sunlight happens to a greater extent, and we see red and orange light more than blue and violet light. That's why sunset is usually a beautiful red or orange color. So next time you see sunset, remember that you're actually seeing Earth rotate into darkness!
Edmonton, Alberta is the capital of the province of Alberta and the seventh most populous city in Canada with a population of 552,045 as of 2016. Edmonton was founded on October 12,1896 as the village of Edgar by John Walter Davidson and it began as a small hamlet on the prairie. The North-West Mounted Police established a post of Edmonton on October 17,1893, the city had an estimated population of 500 residents when it became a town on July 22,1906. Edmonton greatly expanded with the construction of the City of Edmonton in 1912, the city annexed the village of Strathcona on November 17,1916, and annexed the town of Whitemud on November 13,1918. During the early 1900s, Edmonton developed as a city within a city, there were several noxious industrial areas, including the emulsion plant at Whyte Avenue and the oil refinery at Strathcona. Edmonton was also the site of the North-West Mounted Police barracks, which caused public opposition and this site was eventually placed in the Grass Lawn district of the city. During World War II, the Canadian military constructed a training camp on the grounds of the Edmonton Exhibition Park, in May 1954, Edmonton became the permanent capital of Alberta, and the provincial legislature was moved there from Calgary. The city played a role in the Canadian Space Program, the National Film Board of Canada has its headquarters in Edmonton. The city hosts a number of cultural and sporting events, including the Edmonton International Film Festival, the Edmonton International Air Show, the city is also home to the North American headquarters of Toyota, and the Global Operations Center for MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates. Together, these companies employ more than 44,000 people in Edmonton, in 1876, Edwin L. Drake founded the Drake Express company and began hauling freight on horse-drawn busses from the hamlet of Edgar to the foot of the North Saskatchewan River. During the 1930s, Drake started the Alberta Motor Car Company, which began producing automobiles in Edmonton, the city became the second largest in Alberta after Calgary. The citys name was changed to Edmonton on November 5,1956, in 1962, the city hosted the world championships of ice hockey, which were dubbed the Battle of Alberta. The event was hosted by the Edmonton Convention and Exhibition Centre, as of 2000, Edmonton has a population of 552,045 and an urban area of 980,954. }As the sun sets, the sky slowly grows dark. For many people, this is a time to relax and wind down for the day. But have you ever wondered exactly when it gets dark? The answer may surprise you.
Did you know that darkness actually begins long before the sun sets? As the sun gets lower in the sky, its light has to travel through more atmosphere. This filters out some of the blue light, making the sun look redder. At the same time, shadows get longer and darker. So by the time the sun finally dips below the horizon, darkness has already begun to fall.
Of course, not all places on Earth experience darkness at the same time. Near the equator, the sun sets and rises almost directly overhead. This means that there is less of a difference between daytime and nighttime. Closer to the poles, however, the sun stays low in the sky for much of the year. This leads to longer periods of darkness during wintertime.
