The city is located at the junction of US-81 and US-270, just east of the Missouri border. The local economy is primarily based around agricultural production and small businesses. The city is home to three colleges and universities, including the University of Kansas.

Edgerton is located in the southeast corner of Johnson County, KS, in the middle of an agricultural area. The city is bordered by the city of Lawrence, the county seat of Johnson County, to the north, south, and west. US-81 and US-270 intersect in the city, providing access to major transportation routes in the area. The city is about halfway between Kansas City, MO and Omaha, NE.

The climate in Edgerton is warm and humid all year round. The city experiences four distinct seasons, with spring being the most pleasant.
