The city of East Chicago, IN is located in Porter County, approximately 63 miles south of Chicago and 247 miles southwest of Indianapolis. East Chicago is bounded by the Crossover Bridge on the south and east, the Chicago River on the north, and the Calumet River on the west. The city is part of the Great Lakes Megalopolis and is part of the Danville, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area.

East Chicago is located at 41°41′11″N 88°0′37″W. According to the 2010 census, the city had a population of 27,941. The city is located on the shores of Lake Michigan and suffers from some of the worst air pollution in the country. The city has a hot-summer continental climate and averages 36.5 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and 17.3 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter.

East Chicago is located in central-east Indiana, along the Ohio River watershed. The city is bordered on the south by the city of Gary, IN and on the west, north and east by the City of Porter, IN. Interstate 94 runs through the eastern side of the city, with access from Exits 57 and 59. Indiana State Road 37 passes through the southern side of the city and connects it with Interstate 65 and the larger cities of Indiana to the south and west.

The closest states are Illinois to the west, Michigan to the north, and Ohio to the east. The capital of the USA is Washington, D.C.
