East Brunswick is located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, and is bordered by New Brunswick to the northwest and north, Cranbury to the northeast, Atlantic City to the east and southeast, and Sussex County to the south. The city had a population of 103,864 as of the 2010 Census, making it the most populous municipality in Middlesex County.

Geographically, East Brunswick is located in the wide valley of the Raritan River, bounded on the west by the New Brunswick highlands and on the east and south by the Piscataway Hills. The city experiences a humid subtropical climate, with nearly all of the precipitation falling in the summer months.

East Brunswick is served by New Jersey Transit's bus and rail service, including the Brunswick Line light rail line which is scheduled to open in 2019. The city is also home to the Rutgers University Police Department.

East Brunswick was founded by Reverend Dr. Nicholas S. Frelinghuysen in 1803, and was named for his home town of East Braintree, Massachusetts. The city was originally settled by Dutch and English immigrants, and was known as the "Crossroads of the East." East Brunswick was incorporated as a town on April 11, 1855, and became a city on March 5, 1878.

Today, East Brunswick is the home of several major employers, including Johnson & Johnson, Kimberly-Clark, and ADP. The city is also home to numerous cultural institutions, including the East Brunswick Cultural Center, East Brunswick Historical Society Museum, East Brunswick Jazz and Blues Open Air, and the East Brunswick 30th Street Arboretum.
