East Amherst, New York is a city located in Orange County, in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 36,097. As of the census of 2000, the population was 32,343. The city is located on the southeastern edge of the Town of Amherst and covers an area of 5.51 square miles (14.47 km²).

East Amherst is in the northeast corner of the Town of Amherst, bordered by the Town of Northampton to the north, the Town of Geneva to the east, and the Town of Spring Stream to the south. The city is hilly, with some areas near the riverbanks and others in the lower valleys. The nearby hamlets of East Amherst Center and East Amherst Village are both largely developed and densely populated, but some open fields and scattered housing exist.

The city is at the junction of Interstate 488 and U.S. Route Routes8 and20. Interstate 488 leads northeast to Syracuse and southwest to Albany, while U.S. Route 8 leads east to the Hamlin area of western Orange County and west to Albany. U.S. Route 20 leads northwest to Buffalo and southeast to the city of Hartford.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.51 square miles (14.47 km²), of which, 5.40 square miles (13.98 km²) is land and 0.19 square miles (0.48 km²) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 32,343 people, 12,571 households, and 9,584 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,227.1 people per square mile (871.3/km²). There were 13,078 housing units at an average density of 693.7 per square mile (268.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.52% White, 1.11% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.94% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.22% of the population.

There were 12,571 households out of which 36.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.1% were non-families. 22.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.26.
