Dysart is situated approximately midway between Wichita and Kansas City on US-183, approximately northwest of Wichita and south of Kansas City. The city had a population of 10,524 at the 2010 census. Dysart is part of the Wichita metropolitan area.

Located in the Flint Hills, Dysart is east of Wichita in northern Kansas and is about halfway between the two cities. The city is at the junction of the Arkansas and Republican Rivers. Dysart is a river city.

The area was first settled in 1859 by Col. Ebenezer Brown, marking the second settlement in Sedgwick County after the county was named for General John Sedgwick, who died at the Battle of Antietam. The first post office in Dysart was established in 1875.
