Dunkirk, located on the North Sea coast of France, is the most populous city in the Pas-de-Calais département. The city is situated on the A16 autoroute, near the Belgian border. Dunkirk is served by two airports, Dunkirk-Quiberon Airport and Lesquin Airport. The city has a population of 198,621 with a population density of 1,707.2 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Dunkirk is located in the north of France, between the Belgian border and Dunkirk-ville, a suburb of the larger city of Calais. In the north, Dunkirk is bounded by the North Sea and in the south by the marshlands of the Aa Canal. On the east, Dunkirk shares boundaries with the communes of Menin and Wissant. The Mont Saint-Michel stands to the north-east, across the English Channel.
The city of Dunkirk is built on a marshland flanked on three sides by the Channel. The city owes its origin to two separate settlements. Dunkirk Port, on the north side of the Channel, served as a Newcastle port and grew rapidly in the Middle Ages. The population of Dunkirk Port was almost entirely English-speaking, reflecting the demographic foundation of the city. The second settlement was on the south side of the Channel, on the site of present-day Dunkirk. This was founded by the Duchy of Normandy, in the Duchy of Normandy in the 10th century, and developed as a prosperous commercial town.
Dunkirk was captured by the English in 1340 and was subjected to a siege by the English and the Burgundians in 1400. The Franco-Breton army recaptured the city in 1405. The city was occupied and destroyed by the Spanish in 1558. William the Silent, leader of the Dutch Revolt, defeated the Spanish at the Battle of Zutphen in 1589 and liberated Dunkirk.
In the 19th century, Dunkirk became a popular transatlantic passenger port. The opening of the railway to Calais in 1839 and to Paris in 1843 made Dunkirk an important commercial center. The city was bombed by the Luftwaffe in 1940 as part of the Blitz, and again in 1944. Dunkirk was liberated by the Allies on 27 May 1945.
