Donaldsonville, Louisiana, is located in Union Parish, south of Monroe, North Carolina, east of Alexandria, and west of New Orleans. The city has a population of 37,491 as of the 2010 Census. Donaldsonville is the principal city of the Donaldsonville Micropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 132,748 at the 2010 Census.

Donaldsonville is located on Soldier's Creek, the east fork of Bayou Lafourche. The city is approximately east of the Louisiana-Mississippi state line. The closest state capital is Baton Rouge, approximately to the southeast. The closest U.S. capital is Washington, D.C., approximately to the northeast.

Donaldsonville has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen "Cfa").

As of the 2010 Census, Donaldsonville had a poor economy, with a Per Capita Income of only $21,384, ranking it as one of the poorest cities in Louisiana.

The city has a public school system, consisting of five schools, two of which are elementary, one is middle, and one is high school. The system has an enrollment of 2,311 students.

Donaldsonville is home to the Donaldsonville Correctional Center, which houses 1,803 male inmates, as well as the only state-operated women's prison in Louisiana, the Louisiana Women's Prison.
