It is located on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay and is adjacent to the cities of Berkeley and Oakland. It was incorporated in 1901. The population was 23,849 at the 2010 census. The city is named after its founder, Joseph Emery. Originally called Emeryville Junction, the city was named after mining magnate Joseph Emery who founded the Emery Mining Company. The Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 was held in Emeryville, and the main theater in the Exposition was named Emery Bay.
