Des Allemands is located in the parish of Winn in south-central Louisiana. It is situated at the junction of I-10 and US-61, twelve miles east of the Texas state line and ninety-seven miles south of Jackson, Mississippi. The city is situated on the banks of the Atchafalaya River and at the junction of two major rail lines.

The city has a total area of eleven square miles, of which nine square miles is land and two square miles is water. The city is situated in the Louisiana Bootheel and experiences a humid subtropical climate. The average temperature is 73 degrees Farenheit, but can rise to 94 degrees Farenheit in the summer, and dip to the low 40s F in the winter. The nearest states are Arkansas to the east, and Mississippi to the south. The capital city is Baton Rouge, seventy-three miles to the southwest. The nearest airport is the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, located thirty-seven miles southeast of the city.

The main transportation artery in the area is I-10. The city is served by the Louisana State Highway 9 which runs north-south and connects the city to Baton Rouge, Hammond and Lake Charles in the south. The interstate also intersects with US-61, the major east-west artery in the area. Rail transportation is available to the city through the Amtrak service. The nearest rail station is located seven miles east of the city.

The city is served by the Louisiana State University Winn Governor's Spring Break Campus and a military base, Joint Base Louisiana-Lafayette, located east of the city. Lake Pontchartrain, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the United States, is just to the north of the city.
