Deerwood, located in Macon County, is the seventeenth largest city in Georgia and the eighteenth largest city in the Southeastern United States. The city has been officially designated a Metropolitan Statistical Area by the United States Census Bureau and is also part of theSavannah-Gadsden-Bibb Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Deerwood is located at 30°11′ N 85°48′ W, which gives the city an approximate elevation of 301 feet. The terrain is rolling, with the highest point being just west of the city limits. The city is bisected by the East Fork of the Ocmulgee River and is dominated by two large hills, each with a number of subdivisions visible from the town center. The Ocmulgee National Monument is located just west of Deerwood.

The city is located approximately halfway between Atlanta and Savannah.

The weather in Deerwood is generally warm and humid, with significant seasonal swings. The city experiences four distinct seasons: hot summers, cool autumns, mild winters, and humid summers. The months of January and February are the coldest and wettest, respectively.

As of the census of 2000, there were 97,858 people, 38,456 households, and 25,556 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,057.6 people per square mile (796.2/km²). There were 40,953 housing units at an average density of 811.1 per square mile (314.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 30.84% White, 65.98% African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.05% of the population.

There were 38,456 households out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.4% were married couples living together, 29.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.12.

In the city, the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.6 males.
