  • Sunset

  • Twilight

  • Darkness

Most people know that sunset is the time when the sun goes down. But did you know that the sun doesn't actually set? Instead, Earth rotates into darkness, giving us the illusion that the sun is setting. So what causes sunset?

Well, it's a combination of things. The Earth's atmosphere scatters sunlight in every direction, but blue and violet light are scattered more than other colors. This is why the sky is usually blue during the daytime. As the sun gets lower in the sky, the atmosphere becomes thicker and more dense.

This scattering of sunlight happens to a greater extent, and we see red and orange light more than blue and violet light. That's why sunset is usually a beautiful red or orange color. So next time you see sunset, remember that you're actually seeing Earth rotate into darkness!

, population, and what to see and do

When it comes to off-the-beaten-path places, few can compare to Cuttyhunk City, located in the rural community of North Adams, Massachusetts. Overlooking Deerfield Lake and overlooking the Hayward and Amherst rivers, Cuttyhunk is an eclectic mix of charming colonial homes, artsy boutiques and restaurants, and occasional glimpses of the Blue Hills, all nestled at the foot of the challenging Berkshire Mountains.

Cuttyhunk was once known as the “Tennis Capital of America,” thanks to the many prestigious private and public tennis clubs that dot the city’s landscape. The town is also popular for its fall festivals and tourneys, and for hiking, biking, and fishing in Deerfield and the nearby rivers.

Geographically, Cuttyhunk is situated in the south-central region of Massachusetts, just off Interstate 91 and just north of the Massachusetts-Rhode Island state line. The nearest state capital is Providence, Rhode Island, which is just over an hour away by car. The population of Cuttyhunk – just under 2,000 people – is relatively small when compared to other Massachusetts towns, but it makes up for its size with its lively downtown and a wealth of boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants.

Perhaps the most famous thing to see in Cuttyhunk is the house that is billed as the “Lodgings of Wilt Chamberlain.” Chamberlain, who won six championships with the Philadelphia 76ers, spent much of his off-season in Cuttyhunk and it is said that the house, which is now a museum, is the basis for the fictional home in the movie “Wilt.”

Other must-sees in Cuttyhunk include the 1793 Greene-Stokes-Henderson House, which is furnished with rare wallpaper, furniture, and ceramics; the North Adams Museum of Art; and the 18th-century Goddard-Dalmore-Walker House, which is the oldest remaining building in North Adams. Whatever you do, don’t miss the chance to stroll along the charming Main Street and enjoy a cool drink or bite at one of the local restaurants.

What time does it get dark?

As the sun sets, the sky slowly grows dark. For many people, this is a time to relax and wind down for the day. But have you ever wondered exactly when it gets dark? The answer may surprise you.

Did you know that darkness actually begins long before the sun sets? As the sun gets lower in the sky, its light has to travel through more atmosphere. This filters out some of the blue light, making the sun look redder. At the same time, shadows get longer and darker. So by the time the sun finally dips below the horizon, darkness has already begun to fall.

Of course, not all places on Earth experience darkness at the same time. Near the equator, the sun sets and rises almost directly overhead. This means that there is less of a difference between daytime and nighttime. Closer to the poles, however, the sun stays low in the sky for much of the year. This leads to longer periods of darkness during wintertime.
