{Cumbola is a small city located in the mountains of northeast Peru. It is located in the Los Angeles Province, about 190 miles (305 kilometers) east of Lima. The city is served by a station on the PeruRail network.
Cumbola has a hot, dry climate. The city experiences a cold winter and a hot summer. January is the coldest month, with an average temperature of 18°F ( -0.7°C), and July is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 84°F (29°C). The annual precipitation averages 13.56 inches (343 mm).
Cumbola is located in the Santa Ana mountain range and is bordered by the Apurímac and Lurín mountain ranges. The city is positioned on the confluence of the Callejón de la Costa and the Rímac rivers, which form the Ucayali River.
The city is named after the Gumilla Copaiquirá, a tree in the area that was thought to possess medicinal qualities. The first inhabitants of Cumbola are thought to have been the indigenous Ycaras.
In 1571, the first settlers arrived in the area, coming from the province of Trujillo. The city rose to prominence in the 18th century when it became the administrative center of the Los Angeles Province.
In the early 19th century, Cumbola was the wealthiest city in Peru. It was the site of numerous fought battles between the Peruvian and Mexican forces.
During the War of the Pacific, Cumbola was the site of the Battle of Santa Ana on July 18, 1879, in which almost the entire Peruvian army was destroyed.
