It is within Houston metropolitan area, and is bordered by Brazoria County to the north, Fort Bend County to the east, and Harris County to the south and west. The city has a total area of , of which is land and is water. It is situated on the Houston Ship Channel, and its boundaries encompass a significant portion of the channel.
