Craig is located in western Colorado, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The city is bordered by the state capital, Denver, to the north; Colorado Springs, to the east; Grand Junction, to the south; and Cortez, to the west. The city is home to Colorado Western Community College and the University of Colorado at Boulder. The city's official motto is "Grow where you are planted." Craig has an average temperature of 18 °F (-7 °C) and an annual precipitation of 41.92 inches (1,000 mm). The city is politically divided into four wards: Ward 1, encompassing the downtown area; Ward 3, located south of downtown; Ward 2, covering most of the Midwest district; and Ward 4, which is north of downtown. The population was estimated at 16,711 in 2009. Craig is the largest city in Craig County and the second most populous city in the state of Colorado, after Denver.
