Cowarts is a city in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,576 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bryan–College Station–Waco Metropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land.

At the 2000 census, there were 1,576 people, 521 households, and 359 families residing in the city. The population density was 834.4 people per square mile (327.4/km²). There were 566 housing units at an average density of 341.4 per square mile (131.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 82.56% White, 6.84% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 7.04% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 26.48% of the population.

There were 521 households out of which 38.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% were married couples living together, 16.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.31.

In the city, the population was spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,063, and the median income for a family was $36,036. Males had a median income of $27,344 versus $18,384 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,714.
