Compton, California is located in South Central Los Angeles County, California. It is bordered by Long Beach to the south and west, by Cudahy to the north and east, and by cities of Central and East Los Angeles to the south and southeast respectively. Compton is the largest city in the South Central Los Angeles area and the 48th largest city in the United States. Compton has a population of 168,799 according to the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in the Eastern United States after Detroit.

Compton occupies a significant geographic area within southern Los Angeles County.
