Cochranton is located at the eastern border of West Virginia and is bordered by the city of Weirton, WV to the north, Lewisburg, PA to the northwest, and the town of Greenbank to the west. The city is located at the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers.

The city was founded in 1796 and named for the Earl of Moira, who was the British minister to the United States at the time. The city grew rapidly as a result of the coal mining industry that flourished in the area. Currently, coal mining is no longer a major industry in the city, but the city does have a number of other industries, including steel production and manufacturing.
