Coats city is located in the eastern section of North Dakota, in the eastern part of the state. This city is bordered by the South Dakota state line to the northwest, the city of Newell and the town of Lidgerwood to the west, the city of Fargo to the south, and the city of Alexander to the east. The city has a total area of 11.10 square miles, with a population of 10,711 in the 2010 census.
The city is named after James W. Coats, who was the first railroad executive in the state and was an early investor in the area. The railroad that made the city possible was the BNSF Railway. The city was founded in 1883, and it became a city in 1933.
