Claytonville is located in central New Jersey, just north of Newark and just south of Elizabeth. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.083 square miles (13.325 km2), of which, 5.074 square miles (13.327 km2) is land and 0.029 square miles (0.754 km2) is water.
As with much of New Jersey, Claytonville experiences a humid continental climate, with cool to cold winters and hot, humid summers. The average yearly temperature is 55.8 °F (13.7 °C). The record high temperature was 117 °F (47.3 °C) in 1936 and the record low temperature was −20 °F (−29 °C) in 1899.
Claytonville was first settled in 1710 by Issac Clayton and his family. The city was named for John Clayton, one of the signers of the United States Constitution.
Claytonville has a rich history, with many notable historical events taking place here. The Battle of Ridgefield was fought in nearby Ridgefield, NJ in 1777, and the Battle of Monmouth was fought just north of the city in 1864. Additionally, Claytonville was the birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson.
