It was renamed Chefornak in the 20th century AD in honor of Sheikh Ibrahim Ahmed al-Masoud, the first Prime Minister of the newly-created Iraqi Kurdistan. The city is currently home to approximately 10,000 residents.
Chefornak enjoys a moderate climate, with a cool summer season and a hot, dry winter season. The city is located within the infamous Zagros Mountains, which provide beautiful scenery and make for excellent hiking and tourism opportunities.
